Lapland: December’s Magical Escape
Snow-covered forests, reindeer, husky rides and a little Christmas magic around every corner. Lapland is the ultimate December escape, whether you’re taking the kids to meet Santa or simply fancy experiencing a proper winter wonderland for yourself. Wrap up warm, step into the snow and make this Christmas one to remember.
Where to Stay in Lapland ❄️
Lapland covers a huge area, and where you stay can make a big difference to the type of trip you have. Whether you’re chasing Santa, the Northern Lights, ski slopes or complete Arctic peace and quiet, these are some of the most popular places to base yourself.
Rovaniemi: Great for Families & First-Time Visitors 🎅
Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and one of the easiest places to experience the magic for the first time. It’s home to Santa Claus Village, has plenty of hotels and family-friendly activities, and is easy to explore without hiring a car. You’ll also find some gorgeous winter resorts nearby, including Apukka Resort. It can get busy around Christmas and feels more commercial than some of Lapland’s smaller destinations, but for a first family trip, it’s hard to beat.
Saariselkä: Great for Northern Lights & Arctic Scenery 🌌
Head further north and things start feeling considerably wilder. Saariselkä sits close to Urho Kekkonen National Park, with dark skies, snowy landscapes and excellent opportunities for spotting the Northern Lights. It’s also home to some of Lapland’s famous glass-igloo accommodation, including Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, plus husky adventures, reindeer experiences and one seriously long toboggan run.
Levi: Great for Skiing & Après-Ski ⛷️
If you want plenty happening once you’ve finished playing in the snow, Levi is a brilliant choice. It’s one of Finland’s best-known ski resorts, with extensive slopes alongside winter safaris, restaurants, bars, spas and a wide choice of accommodation. It gives you the full Lapland winter experience with a little more buzz after dark.
Inari: Great for Wilderness & Sámi Culture 🦌
For somewhere quieter and more remote, head north to Inari. Sitting beside vast Lake Inari, the area is an important centre of Sámi culture and offers a very different Lapland experience. Think frozen landscapes, peaceful wilderness and dark Arctic skies rather than busy resorts and Christmas crowds. It’s a fantastic choice if you want to experience Lapland’s nature and culture at a slower pace.
